When you’ve finally come to the place where you realize that you need others to help you recover from your addiction to drugs/ alcohol or gambling, the next step is to decide which type of treatment would be best for you. The most important part is that the type of treatment you chose is the one which will ensure that you’re successful at reaching your goals. The counsellors at CASON are skillful and trained to know which type of treatment is likely best for you but you will likely make some decisions together about how to move forward.
Let’s explore some of the types of treatment available through CASON….
1) Community Treatment – Counselling
2) Day Treatment
3) Referral to Residential Treatment
Your counsellor at CASON will ask you some questions when you’re here for your initial Assessment appointment to help determine you decided. The type of treatment that is best for you is often determined by the severity of your substance use, your level of motivation/readiness to change and how stable things are in your life right now (social, emotional, physical).
Counselling on a regular basis may be all you need at this time. Depending on your current situation and the availability of the counsellor, you would attend counselling approximately once every two weeks or once a month. Your counsellor would typically help you set goals, identify triggers to use your substance, and develop health coping skills and supports to stay clean and sober.
If you feel that you would like more support during your recovery you may speak to your counsellor about attending the abstinence-based Day Treatment program offered at CASON. The program is a group-level intervention which is three weeks in duration, meeting Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. It provides group process activities daily and focuses on life skills development and lifestyle change issues. Clients are required to complete an Assessment and Early Treatment before beginning Day Treatment and continuing with CASON Aftercare.
You also have the option of attending Residential Treatment if a safe and structured environment, away from all triggers, would be most helpful for you at this time. There are a variety of residential treatment centres in Ontario, including short-term and long term. Keep in mind that there are smoking restrictions at someof these treatment centres so it’s important to discuss with your counsellor what your preferences are. There will be paperwork involved with the process and the wait times also vary for each treatment centre between a few weeks to 6 months or more.
Regardless of which type of treatment you feel is right for you at this time, keep in mind there are also Life Strategies Groups held every Monday at the main CASON office at 2:30pm that you are welcome to attend! Topics include: Mindfulness, Communication, Coping with Cravings and Leisure Activities. These groups are open to all clients of CASON and perfect for those awaiting assessment or treatment.
